Description
Personal branding applies to all attorneys--not just solo practitioners. All attorneys need clients. The definition of an "attorney" is "a person appointed to act for another in business or legal matters." Even attorneys who represent the government or large businesses have clients--individuals within those structures who can terminate the relationship with the attorney.
To thrive and stand out in today's competitive legal market, attorneys must be intentional about creating and establishing their personal brand. Establishing a personal brand facilitates relationships with coworkers, clients, and opposing counsel; enables a connection with clients; and can lead to greater career satisfaction and success.
Defining your personal brand starts by understanding your values, strengths, passions, and unique skills and qualities. Based on this self-assessment, ask yourself what persona you want to portray to clients, other attorneys, and the greater public. What is important to you in your legal practice, and what unique values, experiences, and qualities do you bring to your clients and the legal profession?
Developing a personal brand also allows attorneys to engage in professional activities that resonate with an attorney's values. This, in turn, provides exposure to the types of clients an attorney hopes to represent and like-minded lawyers who can serve as helpful mentors or client referral sources. Personal branding can play a critical role in bar association participation, article authorship, or speaking engagements.
Listen as our experienced speaker provides tips for new attorneys to identify and build their unique personal brand to launch a meaningful and successful legal career.
